Honey

Miel

LATIN NAME: Mel.

COMMON NAME: Honey, a sweet substance produced by Apis mellifera honey bees from the nectar of flowers.

HABITAT: When foraging for a flower, the bee collects its nectar, which it dries by dehumidifying it and works to transform it into honey. When it arrives at the entrance to the hive, it passes this processed nectar to the other bees before going back to collect more.

The antiviral effects of honey

Viruses are very small particles of genetic material (DNA or RNA) surrounded by a protein envelope. Unable to reproduce on their own, viruses infect a host by introducing their genetic material into "healthy" cells, hijacking the cell's internal machinery to manufacture other viral particles and ultimately killing the "healthy" cells.

Since ancient times, honey has been used for its anti-infectious properties, preventing bacterial, viral or fungal proliferation thanks to the enzyme glucose oxidase, which produces hydrogen peroxide, a natural antiseptic.

Honey naturally contains flavonoids, including quercetin, which is known to promote substantial autophagy, a process that enables a cell to eliminate impurities or damage, helping the body to recover and protect itself in the event of a viral infection.
