The anti-inflammatory effects of chestnuts
The common chestnut is a tree from the Fagaceae family, which produces the fruit known as chestnuts. In France, the fruit is widely consumed, and the chestnut tree can be found in virtually every region of the country, covering some 744,000 hectares.
Numerous studies have revealed the pharmacological interest of chestnut fruit extracts, attributed to the presence of bioactive compounds. The antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity of Castanea sativa extracts is often correlated with their high content of tannins, flavonoids and triterpenic saponosides with escines (or aescines). Dietary polyphenols, including tannins, are thought to interfere with targets of inflammation, notably the transcription factor NF-κB, a central regulator (historically or more accurately, plesiomorphic) of inflammatory responses.
In vitro tests carried out by TEXINFINE Laboratories on the combined extracts of Castanea sativa and Portulaca oleracea showed an inhibition of around 50% of the NF-κB transcription factor and the two cytokines (IL-1β, PGE2) that play a major role in inflammatory processes.
